RESEARCH PROPOSAL: Epidemiology of Cardiac and Neurological Complications of COVID-19 in Ontario Visible Minorities including Chinese and South Asian Canadians

The Chinese Canadian Heart and Brain Association (CCHABA) is a non-profit organization established in 2019 by a group of dedicated Cardiologists and Neurologists along with several volunteer board members. Its mission is to promote and raise the awareness and knowledge of heart diseases and brain disorders among the Chinese Canadian community

Based on several successful research studies carried out by The Chinese Canadian Heart and Brain Association (CCHABA) clinicians/scientists over the past 30 years, it is proposed that a very important and much needed research project regarding:

  1. How COVID19 pandemic affects the various ethnic groups of Canadians including Chinese Canadians with cardiac and neurological complications ?
  1. How does COVID19 affects the morbidity and case fatality rates of various ethnic groups including Chinese Canadians with cardiac and neurological disorders?
  1. The application of a “Prognostication Score”(COVID-GRAM) in patients with cardiac and neurological complications due to COVID-19.

Research team members:

Dr. Gordon W. Moe, MD, FRCPC, FACC, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), University of Toronto, Director of Heart Failure program, St. Michael’s Hospital.

Dr. Chi-Ming Chow, MD, FRCPC, FACC, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), University of Toronto, Director of Echocardiography, St. Michael’s Hospital.

Dr. Dennis Ko, MD, FRCPC, Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), University of Toronto, Senior research scientist, Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES).

Dr. Peter Liu, MD, FRCPC, FACC, Senior research Scientist and Vice-President of Research, Cardiovascular program, Ottawa Heart Institute, Former endowed Chair of Cardiovascular research, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Dr. Robert Chen, MA, MBBChir, FRCPC, Professor of Medicine (Neurology), University of Toronto, Senior research scientist, Krembil Center of Neuroscience Research, Toronto Western Hospital.

PROPOSED BUDGET:  CAD $75,000

Duration of research project: July 2020 to December 2021.

A tax receipt will be issued by the University of Toronto.

The final report of our research projects will be submitted to the Board of Directors of CCHABA. This report will be available to the donors upon their request.
